Put your logic skills to the test with Gelato Code! One player creates a secret gelato combo, and the other must guess it before they run out of guesses! Each wrong guess reveals how many of the "flavors" the guesser chose correctly and how many of them are in the correct order. A fun, fast-paced challenge for clever thinkers.

Set includes:

  • 1 wooden playing board.
  • 1 wooden gelato stand.
  • 144 flavor tokens.
  • 60 pegs.
  • 1 cotton pouch.
  • Instruction manual.

HOW TO PLAY

To set up the game, all flavor tokens are mixed up in a pile in the center of the table. At the beginning of the game, you agree on the number of rounds (we suggest 5 or 10 rounds) and the difficulty mode. For the first round, the player who ate gelato (ice cream) more recently plays first (sets the code: the flavor combination). For the following rounds, you take turns in who sets the code.

On your turn, you secretly pick a flavor combination (code) and put it on the gelato stand in a way that it is visible only to you. The other player tries to guess this combination in the fewest tries possible, by putting a flavor combination in the first game board slot, waiting for your feedback and then continuing with the next guesses, until the gelato combination is decoded!

The feedback is given by using the pegs. The beige peg indicates that the color is correct, but the position is wrong, whereas the brown peg indicates that both color and position are correct. Once the gelato combination is decoded, the opponent is awarded as many points as the number of the empty gelato slots on the game board! In the end of the game, the player with the most points wins!

According to the age, skill and appetite, you can play in 3 different modes, as described below:

EASY MODE

  • The gelato code should have 4 flavor tokens, choosing from all 8 flavors (8 available colors)
  • The feedback is given with position accuracy. That means that the position of a colored peg corresponds to the position of the referred flavor e.g. if the first flavor token is correct only in color and the third flavor token is correct, in color and position, then you should put a beige peg in the first slot and a brown peg in the third peg slot.
  • You only play with the first 8 white slots on the game board (without the brown ones), so if for example the code is found with the 5th try, then the points awarded are 3!

MEDIUM MODE

  • The gelato code should have 3 flavor tokens, choosing from only 6 flavors (you discard 2 colors and play only with the 6 colors left)
  • The feedback is given without position accuracy. That means that the position of a colored peg doesn’t correspond to the position of the referred flavor token, and you only give the information, using the 3 white peg slots. If for example the opponent has guessed the first flavor correct in color and position and the third flavor correct only in color, then you should put a brown and a beige peg in the peg slots in any way, regardless of the position of the tokens.
  • You play with all 10 slots on the game board (white and brown ones), so if for example the code is found with the 4th try, then the points awarded are 6!

DIFFICULT MODE

  • The gelato code should have 4 flavor tokens, choosing from only 6 flavors (you discard 2 colors and play only with 6 colors)
  • The feedback is given without position accuracy, as described above.
  • You play with all 10 slots on the game board (white and brown ones).

 NOTES

  • The difficult mode might be overwhelming in the beginning, so you can start by familiarizing yourself with the game by playing the first 2 modes, before moving to the difficult one.
  • For the beginning, we suggest that you keep the gelato code simple, without any double flavors. And after some practice, you can add if you want a further element of difficulty, by agreeing in the beginning of the game that the double flavors are valid and can be played throughout the game. However, in a gelato code, only one flavor can be double, so for example, you can have red, pink, brown, brown, but you can’t have red, red, brown, brown.
  • It is recommended to keep the flavor tokens all together and shuffled in the center of the table at all times, as grouping them by color might reveal the code on the gelato stand.
